Culture. Knowledge of local cultures and languages are key elements in trust-building.

In the case of Indonesia, PACTA staff have been working in support of the Aceh peace process for nearly a decade. PACTA’s General Manager has been engaged in the Aceh peace process since 2000, initially in a personal capacity subsequently as part of the Helsinki peace talks facilitated by CMI as a member of the mediation team and later in AMM alongside another current PACTA staff member. Following the closure of AMM, both continued their efforts under a peacebuilding program in Aceh.

The Aceh program (IPAC) builds directly on this previous work and is carried out in partnership with the Indonesian Peace Institute (IPI). Both PACTA and IPI are committed to sustaining this program (2010-2014) for as long as is necessary to ensure that the tremendous gains made by the Government of Indonesia and the people of Aceh in recent years can be transformed into sustainable political, social and economic development.
